  Angina Pectoris
Causes

The main cause of angina pectoris is the gradual narrowing and hardening of coronary vessels (atherosclerosis).

But there are also other causes, even if less frequent:

  • Coronary spasm: this causes the reduction of blood flow in the coronaries due to narrowing without obstruction. Its cause is suspected to stem from nervous origin  (fright, stress or depression).

  • Dilating myocardiopathy: an extreme situation in which the heart tends to increase its own volume for unknown reasons.

  • Tachycardia (increase of heart rate) or arrhythmia (irregular heart beat).

  • Arterial hypertension.

  • Aortic valve problems (stenosis or narrowing).

  • Pulmonary causes.

  • Gastrointestinal causes.
