Myofascial syndrome
Treatment

Treatment for MPS may include:

  • Massage therapy for trigger points.
  • The "spray and stretch" method (stretching the muscles involved after application of a coolant spray.
  • Local injections with anesthetics like lidocaine.
    • Acupuncture.
    • Exercising muscles.
    • Physical therapy.
    • Change of diet.
    • Change in body position when sleeping.
    • Trycyclic antidepressants taken in small doses.
    • Elimination of stress.
    • Local massage with ice for 10 minutes every 6 hours.
    • Use of acetylsalicylic acid derivatives like aspirin.
The best therapy for this illness is to find out what caused the trigger point in the first place and to prevent the condition from becoming chronic. This is possible through initial self-diagnosis or, failing that, seeing a medical specialist. Myofascial pain is often localized over roughly circular areas (1/2" to 3/4" in diameter, 1-2 cm) which, if pressed, causes a range of unpleasant to acute pain.
