Back pain is a common complaint, caused mainly by muscle and tendon disorders, and, to a lesser extent, the body's complex system of nerves. It is estimated that some 80% of the world's population has experienced back pain at least once in their lifetime.
Bad posture or sudden awkward movements are the main cause of back pain in muscles or tendons, like the kind caused by a rear-end auto accident. Other factors like a sedentary lifestyle and excess weight (such as a protruding belly that pulls on the midriff), work to overload the spinal column's lower, or lumbar area, and worsen back symptoms.
Osteoarthritis (a degenerative form of arthritis caused by wear and tear) in the lumbar region is the most frequent cause of back pain in men and women over 50. Malformation of the spinal column (such as scoliosis, hyperlordosis and spondyloptosis) can also cause backache, as can a misaligned pelvis, which displaces the spinal column.
Some degenerative rheumatic, inflammatory, infectious or tumor-related diseases involving the bone may alter the spinal column's structure and cause intense pain as well.
Nerves leading from the lumbar region that are pinched by misaligned discs can cause problems and varying levels of pain in the back or lower limbs. The most widely known cause of disk compression is a herniated intervertebral disc. This condition is easily detected in the lumbar region with diagnostic imaging tests.
