Symptoms are always painful, may occur in different areas and can vary in their intensity.
Mechanical pain appears during physical activity and decreases with rest or when held in certain positions. Inflammatory pain is present even during rest, is not relieved by changing body position and tends to get worse with each movement (like whiplash).
For those with a case of stiff neck, pain makes it hard to turn the head, making tasks like driving a car and checking traffic difficult. Holding the same position for long periods of time causes diffused pain, commonly experienced by computer operators and drivers. This type of pain can be relieved by rotating and flexing the neck area. Whiplash, characterized by a violent movement of the entire spinal column, may also cause sensation problems in the upper limbs, headaches and back muscle stiffness.
With various forms of arthritic bone and joint degeneration, neck movement may be restricted and sometimes accompanied by vertigo and nausea. In the initial stages of rheumatic disease, neck pain is accompanied by acute pains in other joints, while in infectious diseases (like meningitis) the pain is particularly intense.
Neck pain stemming from neurological disorders may be present, but is not the most important symptom of this condition - problems involving sensitivity and movement of the affected upper limbs are.
