Prevention

To a certain extent, menstrual pain can be prevented. Women who suffer from it on a regular basis should:

  • Follow a healthy diet. Limit alcohol, caffeine, fats and sugars, and increase the amount of fruit and vegetables in the daily diet.
  • Exercise regularly. Physical exercise reduces menstrual pain. A half hour's walk 3 times a week is a good habit to get into. Aerobic activities are best, especially swimming, jogging and cycling.
  • Reduce stress. Learning to relax helps cope with pain. Relaxation techniques that work well are yoga and biofeedback training.
