Prevention

As in other diseases of the teeth and mouth, the best prevention against abscess is proper oral hygiene. In fact, oral hygiene helps eliminate dental plaque, the primary cause of tooth decay, and helps maintain healthy gums. The simplest ways to promote good oral hygiene are to:

  • Brush teeth at least three times daily.
  • Use toothpaste containing fluoride to help protect dental enamel.
  • Use dental floss daily.
  • Use a toothbrush with medium stiff bristles that are rounded. Replace toothbrushes every two months.

Regular visits to the dentist are an important part of keeping teeth healthy. The dentist can find problems before they become noticeable--and the earlier, the better. Every six months teeth should be cleaned by a dental hygienist. In addition to keeping teeth clean and white, this helps remove accumulated plaque and tartar.
