Prevention

The best way to prevent caries is to maintain good oral hygiene. Regular brushing is essential to remove plaque and food that promote bacterial growth.

Teeth should be brushed at least 3 times a day, after each meal and before going to bed. A toothbrush with medium bristles is generally recommended. Front teeth should be brushed from the gums up, while the premolars and molars should be brushed using gentle circular motions.

Use of dental floss is also extremely important. The floss cleans spaces between teeth that the toothbrush can't reach.

A healthy diet is equally important. Cut back on sugars and sweet foods like honey and marmalade. Sugars are metabolized by the bacterial plaque and are then transformed into acids.

Fluoride is effective in strengthening dental enamel. Dental enamel continues to develop until puberty, and fluoride can enhance this process. Commercially available fluoride tablets are especially recommended for children, where the use of toothpaste containing fluoride benefits adults. Besides strengthening tooth enamel, fluoride reduces acid formation.

Regular professional dental care is a basic part of prevention. Adults should see their dentist at least twice a year, while children and pregnant mothers should go more often.
