Dental caries

The term "caries" comes from Latin and means "dry rot." Dental caries is the progressive decay of tooth enamel. It starts with erosion of the enamel by acids that are produced by bacterial plaque. The plaque is a film that forms on teeth and gums and is mostly composed of bacteria.

Caries is discomforting and often painful. It can have various consequences, such as:

  • Pain
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold, sweet and sour
  • Swelling
  • Tooth loss

Tooth loss can, in turn, cause:

  • Chewing problems
  • Digestive problems
  • Malocclusion (imperfect positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed).
  • Jaw damage
Caries is the most frequent cause of toothache. Generally, it is more frequent in countries with a high standard of living. This is because caries is diet-related. A diet rich in sugars is the main factor in developing of decay.
