Treatment includes a mix of rest, anti-inflammatory drugs, neck exercise and other measures to relieve the pain. Surgery is normally recommended only when the patient does not respond to the normal treatment and the pain does not subside.

Following are some of the most common non-operative treatments to deal with Cervical Arthritis:
  • Learn how to rest your neck.
  • Avoid stress to the neck area.
  • Massage the muscles.
  • Review your posture when working during the day.
  • Consider using a special pillow at night.
  • Visit a physical therapist for guided sessions of neck exercising.
  • As in other forms of arthritis, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, naproxen sodium or ibuprofen may be recommended to reduce inflammation and relieve the pain.
  • Normally, if the cause is arthritis the pain is eased by keeping the neck flexed.
  • If the cause is an injury, then traction may be more helpful.
It is important to note that treatment should be personalized as each case is different and patients respond differently to treatment. Only a doctor can suggest what is best for you and should always be consulted before commencing any treatment.
