Prevention

Currently there are no tried and true methods for the prevention of RA. The only approach is early diagnosis and testing to determine the stage of the illness and the most appropriate drugs during each phase. Exercise, rest and physical therapy can help preserve joint mobility and strengthen muscles, but will not change the course of the illness. The prognosis is most positive for white male patients who stick to an appropriate therapeutic regimen. In some reported cases, RA patients have developed fatal respiratory infections; it is therefore important to avoid contact with people who have flu, pneumonia, or other contagious respiratory illnesses.
